TCS Interview Questions

TCS hires at a scale no other Indian employer matches, and it hires through a fixed funnel: the National Qualifier Test, then a technical round, then MR/HR. At many campus drives the technical, MR and HR happen back-to-back on the same day, sometimes in the same room with a panel of two or three people. For experienced hires the NQT is skipped and the funnel is usually one or two technical rounds followed by HR.

2. What is the TCS NQT and how is it scored? Fresher

The NQT (National Qualifier Test) is TCS's common entrance test. It covers Numerical Ability, Verbal Ability, Reasoning Ability and a Programming Logic section, plus hands-on coding. Your score determines not just pass or fail but which role tier you are considered for — the same test routes candidates to Ninja, Digital or Prime. It is valid for a defined window, so a good score can be reused across drives within that period.

3. What is the difference between TCS Ninja, Digital and Prime? Fresher

Digital requires a higher NQT score plus a separate advanced coding section and pays substantially more. 4. What is the eligibility criteria for TCS? Fresher

Broadly: a recognised full-time degree, a minimum aggregate (commonly 60% or equivalent CGPA) across 10th, 12th and graduation, and a limit on active backlogs — usually zero at the time of interview. There are also gap-year limits, typically two years maximum. Criteria vary by drive and year, so the posted notification for your specific drive is the authority, not a general list.

5. Does TCS have a service agreement or bond? Fresher

Yes. Freshers typically sign a service agreement committing to a minimum tenure, with a financial penalty if you leave before it ends. This is a contractual commitment, not a certificate hold in the way candidates often fear, but you should read the amount and the duration before signing rather than after. Ask for the document in writing during the HR round if it has not been shared.

6. How long does TCS take to release results and joining letters? Fresher

Interview results often come within a few days to two weeks, but the gap between an offer letter and an actual joining date can be considerably longer — months, in some intake cycles. Treat the offer and the joining date as two separate milestones, keep other options warm until you have a confirmed date, and follow up through the campus placement cell or the TCS NextStep portal rather than waiting silently.

7. How does the TCS process differ for experienced hires? 2–5 yrs

The NQT is replaced by a résumé shortlist. You get one or two technical rounds focused on your actual stack and the projects on your CV, then HR for compensation and notice period. The questions become far more specific — instead of "what is polymorphism" you are asked why you chose a particular design in a system you built, and what you would change. Expect to defend your CV line by line.

8. Can you reattempt the TCS NQT, and how long is a score valid? Fresher

The NQT runs in cycles through the year and you can sit it again in a later cycle; a score stays usable for a defined validity window, so one strong result can carry you into more than one drive. What you cannot do is retake it repeatedly inside the same cycle to chase a higher tier. Treat the first sitting as the real attempt rather than as practice, because the tier it routes you to — Ninja, Digital or Prime — is decided there.

9. Is there a group discussion round at TCS? Fresher

For the standard fresher funnel, no. TCS dropped GD from most drives and gets that signal instead from the MR round and from the communication assessment inside the NQT. Some off-campus, BPS and lateral processes still run a discussion or a case exercise, so read your own drive notification — but do not spend preparation time on GD technique at the cost of coding practice.

10. What documents should you carry to a TCS interview? Fresher

A printed CV, photo ID, your TCS NextStep application reference, and academic records for 10th, 12th and every semester of your degree, plus documentation for any gap or backlog. TCS verifies your percentages against the marksheets, so a figure rounded up on your CV becomes an integrity question rather than a typo. Carry originals plus one photocopy set, and know your exact aggregate before you walk in.

11. How does TCS decide your project and technology after joining? Fresher

Allocation happens after the initial training at a TCS learning centre and is driven by client demand at that moment, your training scores and the base location you are mapped to — not by a preference you stated at interview. You can register an interest and it is sometimes honoured, but the honest framing is that your first project is assigned to you. Internal movement to another account or technology usually becomes realistic only after you have served a minimum period on the current one.

NQT aptitude and reasoning

12. What topics does the Numerical Ability section of the NQT cover? Fresher

Percentages, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, time-speed-distance, time and work, averages, simple and compound interest, number system and divisibility, permutations and combinations, and basic probability. The individual questions are not conceptually hard; the section is hard because it is timed tightly. Learning the shortcut forms — the percentage-to-fraction table, the combined work-rate identity, the successive-percentage formula — buys more marks than adding topics does.

13. What is asked in the Verbal Ability section of the NQT? Fresher

Reading comprehension, sentence completion, para-jumbles, error spotting, synonyms and antonyms, and sentence correction, all against a clock, and some sittings add a spoken or written English component. On comprehension the efficient method is to read the questions first and then scan the passage for the relevant segment, because there is rarely time to read every passage in full. Error spotting rewards knowing a handful of rules cold — subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, misplaced modifiers, article usage.

14. What kind of questions appear in the Reasoning Ability section? Fresher

Seating arrangements and puzzles, blood relations, syllogisms, coding-decoding, number and letter series, direction sense, data sufficiency, and figure-based or visual reasoning. Puzzles are worth solving carefully because one setup usually carries three or four questions, so the time spent on the arrangement is amortised. If the interface lets you navigate freely, clear the standalone items first and give the leftover time to the puzzle sets.

15. What is the Programming Logic section, and how does it differ from the coding section? Fresher

Programming Logic is multiple choice: predicting the output of a snippet, giving the time complexity of a loop, properties of data structures and algorithms, tracing recursion, pointer and memory behaviour, and basic OOP. The coding section is hands-on — you write a program in a browser editor and it is run against hidden test cases. The MCQ section rewards reading code precisely; the coding section rewards handling edge cases, because passing only the sample case scores far less than passing all of them.

16. Is there negative marking in the TCS NQT? Fresher

It has varied. Some sections in some cycles have carried negative marking and others have not, and the pattern has changed between cycles, so the instruction screen at the start of your own paper is the only authority. The practical rule is to answer when you can eliminate at least two options and to skip pure guesses when negative marking is announced. Never skim the instruction page to save thirty seconds — that is the cheapest information in the whole test.

17. How should you manage time across the NQT sections? Fresher

Budget roughly a minute or less per aptitude and verbal item, and allow more for reasoning puzzles because they bundle several questions off one setup. The failure mode that costs most candidates is sinking four minutes into one stubborn question and then losing five easy ones at the end of the section. Do a fast first pass taking everything you can solve immediately, flag the rest, and come back — most sections are scored on volume of correct answers, not on the difficulty of what you attempted.

18. How do you clear the sectional cut-offs rather than just the overall score? Fresher

The NQT is typically evaluated section by section as well as in aggregate, so a very strong aptitude score does not rescue a failed verbal section. That changes preparation strategy: your weakest section deserves more time than your strongest, even though practising what you are already good at feels more productive. Take at least a few full-length timed mocks so you find out where you run out of time before the real sitting does it for you.

Coding and programming logic

19. How do you reverse a string without using a built-in reverse function? Fresher

Use two pointers, one at each end, and swap the characters as they move toward the middle, stopping when they meet. That is O(n) time and O(1) extra space if the string is mutable. In languages with immutable strings, such as Python or Java, you convert to a list or char array first, swap in place, and rebuild the string at the end.

20. How do you check whether a number is prime? Fresher

Test divisibility only up to the square root of the number, because any factor above the square root must pair with one below it. Handle the small cases first — numbers below 2 are not prime, 2 and 3 are — then skip even numbers to halve the work. That gives O(sqrt n). Trial division all the way to n is the common mistake and is unnecessarily slow.

21. How do you find the second largest element in an array? Fresher

Track the largest and second largest in a single pass. For each element, if it beats the largest, the old largest becomes the second largest; otherwise if it beats the second largest and is not equal to the largest, update the second largest. That is one pass, O(n), no sorting. Sorting works but is O(n log n) and throws away the fact that you only need two values.

22. How do you check if a string is a palindrome? Fresher

Compare characters from both ends inward with two pointers, returning false on the first mismatch. If the question asks for a case-insensitive or alphanumeric-only check, normalise as you go rather than building a cleaned copy, which keeps it O(1) extra space. Interviewers often follow up by asking you to do it for a linked list, where you either reverse the second half or use a stack.

23. Write a program to print the Fibonacci series. Fresher

Iteratively, keep two variables for the previous two terms and update them in a loop — O(n) time, O(1) space. The naive recursive version is O(2^n) and will be called out; if you write recursion, add memoisation. This is a favourite because it lets the interviewer probe whether you understand why the recursive version is exponential, so be ready to explain the repeated subproblems.

24. How do you find duplicate elements in an array? Fresher

A hash set gives O(n) time and O(n) space: add each element and report any that is already present. If space is constrained and the values are bounded within the index range, you can mark visited positions by negating the value at that index, giving O(1) extra space. State the trade-off out loud — that is what is being assessed.

25. What is the difference between an array and a linked list? Fresher

An array stores elements in contiguous memory, so indexed access is O(1) but insertion and deletion in the middle require shifting, and resizing means reallocating. A linked list stores nodes with pointers, so insertion and deletion at a known position are O(1) but access is O(n) and each node carries pointer overhead. Arrays also benefit from cache locality, which matters more in practice than the Big-O comparison suggests.

26. How do you swap two numbers without a temporary variable? Fresher

You can use arithmetic (a = a + b; b = a - b; a = a - b) or XOR (a = a ^ b; b = a ^ b; a = a ^ b). Both work, but mention the caveats: the arithmetic version can overflow, and the XOR version silently zeroes the value if both operands are the same variable. In real code a temporary variable is clearer and the compiler optimises it anyway — saying that earns more credit than the trick itself.

27. How do you find the missing number in an array containing 1 to n? Fresher

Compute the expected sum n(n+1)/2 and subtract the actual sum; the difference is the missing value, in O(n) time and O(1) space. For large n the sum can overflow a 32-bit integer, so either use a wider type or XOR every index from 1 to n with every array element — the pairs cancel and the missing number remains. Mentioning the overflow risk unprompted is what separates a good answer here from a memorised one.

28. How do you sort an array containing only 0s, 1s and 2s? Fresher

Use the Dutch National Flag approach: keep a low pointer, a mid pointer and a high pointer, and in a single pass swap 0s to the front and 2s to the back while mid advances. That is O(n) time, O(1) space, one pass. The counting approach — count the three values then overwrite — is also O(n) but takes two passes and does not generalise, so say which you chose and why.

29. How do you detect a loop in a linked list? Fresher

Use Floyd cycle detection: move one pointer one node at a time and another two nodes at a time; if they ever meet there is a cycle, and if the fast pointer reaches null there is not. It is O(n) time and O(1) space. The standard follow-up is to find where the loop starts — reset one pointer to the head and advance both one step at a time, and they meet at the entry node.

30. How do you check whether two strings are anagrams? Fresher

Count the characters of the first string in a hash map or a fixed-size array and decrement for the second, then check every count is zero — O(n) time. Sorting both strings and comparing is simpler to write but O(n log n). Ask up front whether case, spaces and Unicode matter, because the fixed-array version quietly assumes a small ASCII alphabet.

31. Write a program to print a pyramid star pattern. Fresher

For n rows, each row i prints n minus i spaces then 2i minus 1 stars, so the whole thing is two nested loops inside an outer row loop. The point of these questions is not the pattern but whether you can derive the space and star counts from the row index instead of hard-coding them. Once you can express the relationship, diamonds, inverted pyramids and Pascal-style patterns are the same problem with a different formula.

32. How do you check whether a number is an Armstrong number, and how do you reverse a number? Fresher

Reverse a number by repeatedly taking the last digit with modulo 10, appending it to a running result multiplied by 10, and dividing the original by 10. For an Armstrong check, count the digits first, then sum each digit raised to that power and compare with the original — 153 works because 1 cubed plus 5 cubed plus 3 cubed is 153. Both are one-loop problems; the common slip is converting to a string when the interviewer wanted the arithmetic version.

Core CS fundamentals

33. What are the four pillars of OOP? Fresher

Encapsulation (bundling data with the methods that operate on it and restricting direct access), abstraction (exposing only what a caller needs), inheritance (deriving a type from another to reuse and specialise behaviour), and polymorphism (one interface serving multiple underlying types). Give a one-line concrete example for each rather than reciting definitions — that is what separates a memorised answer from an understood one.

34. What is the difference between overloading and overriding? Fresher

Overloading means several methods in the same class share a name but differ in parameter list; it is resolved at compile time and is not polymorphism in the runtime sense. Overriding means a subclass replaces a superclass method with the same signature; it is resolved at runtime through dynamic dispatch. Overloading is a naming convenience, overriding is the mechanism behind polymorphic behaviour.

35. What is a primary key and how does it differ from a unique key? Fresher

A primary key uniquely identifies a row and cannot contain NULL; a table has exactly one. A unique key also enforces uniqueness but permits a NULL (how many depends on the database) and a table can have several. Practically, the primary key is the identity of the row and is usually the clustered index; unique keys enforce business rules such as one account per email address.

36. What is normalisation and why is it used? Fresher

Normalisation organises columns and tables to remove redundancy and avoid update, insert and delete anomalies, progressing through normal forms — 1NF for atomic values, 2NF removing partial dependencies on a composite key, 3NF removing transitive dependencies. The purpose is data integrity: a fact is stored once, so it cannot become inconsistent. Reporting systems then deliberately denormalise for read speed, which is worth mentioning.

37. What is the difference between DELETE, TRUNCATE and DROP? Fresher

DELETE removes rows one at a time, can carry a WHERE clause, fires triggers, and is fully logged so it can be rolled back. TRUNCATE deallocates the data pages for the whole table, is much faster, does not fire row triggers, and typically resets identity counters. DROP removes the table structure itself along with the data. DELETE is DML; TRUNCATE and DROP are DDL.

38. What is a deadlock and how can it be prevented? Fresher

A deadlock is a circular wait: each process holds a resource the next one needs, so none can proceed. It requires four conditions simultaneously — mutual exclusion, hold and wait, no preemption, and circular wait — so breaking any one prevents it. The practical technique is imposing a global ordering on lock acquisition, plus timeouts so a stuck transaction fails rather than hanging indefinitely.

39. What is the difference between a process and a thread? Fresher

A process has its own address space; threads live inside a process and share its heap and file descriptors while each keeping a private stack. So threads are cheaper to create and communicate through shared memory, but a bug in one thread can corrupt the whole process, and shared state needs synchronisation. Processes are isolated and therefore safer but need IPC to talk to each other.

40. What happens when you type a URL into a browser? Fresher

DNS resolves the hostname to an IP, a TCP connection is opened (and a TLS handshake performed for HTTPS), the browser sends an HTTP request, the server returns a response, and the browser parses the HTML, builds the DOM, then fetches and applies CSS, JavaScript and images before painting. This question tests breadth — the interviewer is checking whether you can move across layers coherently, so name each step rather than diving deep into one.

41. What is the difference between TCP and UDP? Fresher

TCP is connection-oriented and reliable: it establishes a session, orders segments, acknowledges receipt and retransmits losses, at the cost of latency and overhead. UDP is connectionless and fire-and-forget, with no ordering or delivery guarantee, which makes it faster and suitable for live audio, video and gaming where a late packet is worse than a lost one. HTTP/3 uses QUIC over UDP, which is a good detail to add.

42. What is a stack and what is a queue, and where is each used? Fresher

A stack is last-in-first-out, with push and pop at one end; a queue is first-in-first-out, with enqueue at the back and dequeue at the front. Stacks back function call frames, expression evaluation, undo history and depth-first traversal. Queues back scheduling, buffering, print spooling and breadth-first traversal. Both are O(1) for their core operations, which is exactly why they are used in those places.

43. What is virtual memory, and what is paging? Fresher

Virtual memory gives each process the illusion of a large contiguous address space that the operating system maps onto physical RAM plus disk. Paging is the mechanism: memory is split into fixed-size pages, a page table maps virtual pages to physical frames, and a page not currently resident triggers a page fault that loads it from disk. The benefits are isolation and running programs larger than RAM; the cost is that heavy faulting degrades into thrashing, where the system spends more time swapping than computing.

44. What is the difference between a mutex and a semaphore? Fresher

A mutex is a locking mechanism with ownership — the thread that locks it is the one that must unlock it — and it allows exactly one holder at a time. A semaphore is a signalling mechanism holding a count, allowing up to N concurrent holders, and any thread can signal it. So use a mutex to protect a critical section and a semaphore to limit access to a pool of N resources or to coordinate between threads.

45. What is the difference between a clustered and a non-clustered index? Fresher

A clustered index defines the physical order of the rows, so a table can have only one, and the leaf level of the index is the data itself. A non-clustered index is a separate structure holding the key plus a pointer back to the row, so a table can have many, and a lookup may need an extra step to fetch the remaining columns. That extra step is why covering the query with the index columns is a common tuning move.

46. Write a SQL query to find employees earning more than the average salary. Fresher

SELECT name, salary FROM employees WHERE salary > (SELECT AVG(salary) FROM employees); the inner query runs once and produces a scalar the outer query compares against. If the comparison is meant to be per department, the subquery becomes correlated on department id, or you use AVG() as a window function partitioned by department, which is usually the faster form. Say which reading of the question you are answering before you write it.

47. What is the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases? Fresher

SQL databases are relational, with a fixed schema, joins and strong transactional guarantees, and they scale mainly by making the machine bigger. NoSQL covers several models — document, key-value, column-family, graph — that relax schema and often relax consistency in exchange for horizontal scale and flexible records. The honest answer is that it is a fit question, not a ranking: use relational when the data has relationships and correctness matters, use a document or key-value store when the access pattern is known, simple and very high volume.

48. What are the layers of the OSI model, and how does it map to TCP/IP? Fresher

OSI has seven layers — physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation, application. TCP/IP collapses these into four: link, internet, transport and application. The useful part is knowing which layer a thing lives at: switches and MAC addresses at layer 2, routers and IP at layer 3, TCP and UDP ports at layer 4, HTTP and DNS at the application layer. Interviewers usually follow up by asking where a specific protocol sits.

Cloud, AI and Agile delivery

49. What is cloud computing, and what are IaaS, PaaS and SaaS? Fresher

Cloud computing is renting compute, storage and services on demand rather than owning the hardware. IaaS gives you raw virtual machines, networks and disks and leaves the operating system and everything above it to you. PaaS gives you a managed runtime so you deploy code without managing servers. SaaS gives you the finished application. The dividing line is simply how much of the stack the provider operates for you, and the trade-off is control against operational burden.

50. What is the difference between a virtual machine and a container? Fresher

A virtual machine virtualises hardware and runs a full guest operating system, so it is heavier, slower to start and strongly isolated. A container shares the host kernel and packages only the application and its dependencies, so it starts in under a second and is far denser on the same machine. Containers are the default for deploying services; VMs still matter where you need a different kernel or a harder isolation boundary.

51. What is DevOps, and what happens in a CI/CD pipeline? Fresher

DevOps is the practice of one team owning both building and running a service, supported by automation so releases are small and frequent rather than large and rare. A CI/CD pipeline is the automation: a commit triggers a build, unit and integration tests run, artefacts are produced and scanned, then the change is deployed to an environment automatically or behind an approval gate. The point is that a failure is caught minutes after the commit that caused it, when it is still cheap to fix.

52. What do you know about AI, and how is it being used in IT services? Fresher

At a working level, modern AI systems are large models trained on broad data that generate or classify text, code and images, and are increasingly deployed with tools and retrieval so they can act on real systems rather than only answer questions. In IT services the practical uses are code generation and review, test creation, migration and refactoring of legacy code, ticket triage and documentation. The interviewer is checking whether you can talk about it concretely rather than in slogans, so name a task you have actually used a model for and what it did badly as well as well.

53. What is Agile, and what happens in a sprint? Fresher

Agile is delivering working software in short iterations with feedback after each one, rather than specifying everything up front. In Scrum, a sprint is a fixed timebox of one to four weeks: the team plans a set of items from the backlog, holds a short daily stand-up, demonstrates the increment at a review, and runs a retrospective on how the team worked. TCS delivery teams use these ceremonies day to day, so knowing what a stand-up is actually for — surfacing blockers, not status reporting to a manager — reads better than reciting the manifesto.

Project and résumé questions

54. Explain your final year project. Fresher

Structure it as problem, your specific contribution, the technology and why you chose it, and the outcome. Be explicit about which parts you personally built — panels probe this, and claiming a teammate's module is the fastest way to lose credibility. Keep the opening to about ninety seconds and let them ask for depth rather than delivering everything up front.

55. Why did you choose this technology stack for your project? Fresher

Give a real reason grounded in the constraint you faced — team familiarity, library availability, deployment target, or a performance requirement. "It was popular" or "our guide suggested it" is a weak answer; "we needed real-time updates so we used WebSockets rather than polling" is a strong one. Naming one thing you would choose differently now shows engineering judgement rather than defensiveness.

56. What was the hardest bug you faced and how did you fix it? Fresher

Pick something with a real diagnostic story and walk through how you narrowed it down: the symptom, what you suspected, how you tested that, and what the actual cause turned out to be. The process is the answer — interviewers are assessing whether you debug systematically or by guesswork. A modest bug explained rigorously beats a dramatic one explained vaguely.

57. What would you improve about your current or previous project? 2–5 yrs

Name a specific, honest weakness and the concrete change you would make — better test coverage on a fragile module, replacing a synchronous call that became a bottleneck, or splitting a class that grew too large. Avoid both extremes: claiming there is nothing to improve reads as a lack of self-awareness, and listing everything reads as a lack of ownership.

Managerial round

58. How do you handle pressure or a tight deadline? Fresher

Describe your actual method — how you triage what must ship versus what can slip, when you escalate, and how you communicate a slipping date early rather than late. Then give one short example. Saying "I work well under pressure" without a mechanism is the default answer and carries no information; the escalation habit is what a manager is actually listening for.

59. How would you handle a conflict with a teammate? Fresher

Show that you separate the disagreement from the person: you clarify what each side is optimising for, look for the shared constraint, and take it to a lead only when you genuinely cannot converge. Give an example where you changed your own position — that demonstrates you were listening rather than winning, which is the trait being tested.

60. Are you willing to relocate? Fresher

TCS allocates across many delivery centres and will ask this directly, so answer honestly. Genuine flexibility is an advantage and is worth stating plainly. If you have a real constraint, say so along with what you can do — a preference stated up front is far better than an accepted offer declined at allocation, which affects both you and your campus.

61. Are you comfortable working in any technology, including support or maintenance? Fresher

Say yes if it is true, and mean it — a large share of service-company work begins on existing systems rather than greenfield builds. The strong version connects it to learning: maintaining a live system teaches you production behaviour, debugging and business domain faster than a fresh project does. Refusing outright is usually a rejection at this stage.

62. Are you willing to work in night shifts? Fresher

Client time zones make this a real question, not a hypothetical. Answer directly. If you are willing, say so; if you have a constraint, state it plainly with any flexibility you do have, such as rotational rather than permanent nights. An honest limit is respected; a yes you later retract creates a staffing problem and damages your record.

63. How would you rate yourself out of 10 in your primary programming language? Fresher

Give a number in the 6 to 8 range and immediately justify it with what you can and cannot do — that is the whole point of the question. A 9 or 10 invites a question hard enough to disprove it, and anything below 5 raises why you listed the language at all. Say what you are comfortable with, name the area you know you have not gone deep in yet, and the number stops mattering.

64. What would you do if you were allocated to a technology you have never used? Fresher

Say plainly that you expect it, because allocation follows client demand rather than candidate preference, then describe how you would get productive: the official documentation, the existing codebase and its tests, a small task early to build confidence, and a specific person you would ask when stuck. Give an example of a technology you picked up on your own. This question is a proxy for whether you will be a training cost or a self-starter.

65. Give an example of a time you led a team or took ownership of something. Fresher

Use a real situation with a decision in it — how you split the work, what you did when someone did not deliver, what you personally absorbed to keep the deadline. It does not have to be a formal leadership title; a project, a fest, a club or a group assignment all count. Finish with the outcome and one thing you would do differently, because the reflection is what separates ownership from having been present.

66. Why should we hire you over another candidate with the same scores? Fresher

Do not attack the hypothetical other candidate.
